CardiaVue provides remote vital sign monitoring devices for emergency and longer term monitoring.
Proper handling of emergency situation can mean a difference between life and death. Large cities experience hundreds of thousand emergency call a year putting a stain on Emergency Medical Services departments across the nation. Current hurricanes strained the EMS services even further exposing the need to proper patient evaluation and triage so the proper EMS response is secured and directed where needed the most. Unfortunately, there are few tools tailored for patient evaluation in emergencies, are not tailored for automatic operation and may require training before they are used.
Emergency Response and Patient Transport
In case of emergency, patients need to be transported to the hospital and even treated on the scene and on route when life support is needed. EMS dispatcher can send Advanced Life Support (ALS), Basic Life Support (BLS), or the patient can decide to transport themselves to the hospital. Proper decision support is needed to select the best transport to match patients’ needs.
Advance Life Support
- Fully equipped for advanced life support.
- Advanced stretcher, spine board, etc.

- Highly trained paramedics.
Basic Life Support
- Transport of stable patients.
- Auto loader trolley, stretcher, wheel chair, spine board, etc.
- Oxygen & basic medical and extrication kits.
- Staff with basic training.
- Personally driven by a stable patient.
- Used for scheduled hospital visit, or emergency department visit.
- No medical supplies.
- General availability.
EMS send either ALS or BLS ambulance as a response to the emergency call. The type of the ambulance depends on the local regulations. Some municipalities consider patients’ wellbeing as a priority and send ALS for all emergency calls. Once the patient is evaluated, the ALS either transports the patients to the hospital or hands over the call to the BLS and returns to the EMS facilities without transporting any patents. The ALS return immediately in nonemergency situation to provide low response time in case their services are needed for injured patients that need life support assistance on the scene and during the transport to the hospital. In a typical municipality, ALS only transports 10% of the patients and hands over the call to BLS 90% of the time. Furthermore, 60% of the time patients do not have life threatening conditions and could transport themselves to the hospital on their own or see their primary doctor at a later time if conditions change. Some municipalities send BLS by default to reduce the cost of operating EMS, however this endangers patients’ lives that need advanced life support.
VitaSign - Remote Patient Evaluation and Management
Fast and automatic assessment can save lives as the EMS vehicles can be directed where needed the most and the resources at the hospital can be allocated accordingly for the arriving patient. CardiaVue is providing VitaSign, a remote vital signs monitoring device, that is simple to apply and provides all vital signs remotely to the EMS dispatcher allowing for better evaluation and decision making process.
Patient Assessment by First Responders
Patient assessment during emergency situation is critical for optimal resource allocation according to patient’s condition. The first responders already have numerous task to accomplish when arriving on the scene of an accident or other emergency and they are usually not trained to perform proper patient assessment. Subsequently, they are unable to decide what level of EMS response is needed and the ALS is sent out. VitaSign monitor can be quickly applied, does not require additional training and allows EMS dispatcher to evaluate the need for the EMS response level.
Patient Assessment by Individuals
Emergency situation can also arrive at home, schools, or workplaces. Many times the individual or others call on an ambulance and are unable to properly assess the situation as they do not have the necessary tools or training to properly evaluate the condition of the individual. VitaSign monitor can be used in those situations to provide the necessary information to the EMS dispatcher. Any institution or an individual that may require ambulance transfer dude to preexisting health conditions can purchase VitaSign monitor and use it in case of emergency.
Resource Allocation at Hospitals
Once the patient needs to be transported to the hospital, the hospitals need to secure resources in the form of personnel, surgery room, etc. to assist the patients upon arrive. The patient evaluation is currently not possible until the ambulance arrives at the scene and the hospitals are notified once the patient is evaluated by the EMTs. This late notification may delay the preparation at the hospital to secure resources for proper patient treatment. VitaSign monitor allows for a much earlier assessment and notifications to the hospitals about incoming patient needs.
